I'm proud of the fact that I try very hard to be a good person. I don't always succeed, but I do make it a focus to try to "do the right thing". As I look around during my day, it's so easy to see people who just don't seem to care about the people and/or world around them. I wouldn't want to live like that.

What is the best thing you’ve ever won as a prize?
Hmmm. I've won many things over the years. Lately, I've been winning a lot of passes to activities for the kids, which has definitely been great! As I said in an earlier post, lately I've won tickets to the rodeo, theatre productions, theme parks, movie theatres, aquariums and other fun places. Considering our restricted budget right now, it's been a great thing to be able to continue to take the boys to new and exciting places without spending much money to do so!

In what year of your life did you change the most?
Probably the year after we adopted the boys. Not only did my minute to minute and day to day life change, my priorities, goals and values all changed, too! It really forced me to grow up. I've said before that I became an adult at age 36!

Where is a place you consider to be very tranquil?
Locally, I'd saythe Mayberry-esque town of Wellsboro, PA, which is very near the so-called Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. Stretching out a bit further, the most tranquil place I ever had the pleasure to be was Hacienda Baru, a small villa on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Wow. I would have loved to spend months there, relaxing, reading, hiking and decompressing! If I ever hit it really big, I think I'll spend my winters there!

Sick Duty continues
Sigh. HandsomeBoy is STILL sick! Half of his kindergarten class has the same thing, but some of them are already starting to return to school. There's no way he can go back today and I'm not so sure about tomorrow, either. We're going to the doctor today. I try not to rush to the ped everytime one of the boys gets sick, but four days of a fever is enough to send me there!
In other news, I had another busy day yesterday. In addition to all the normal house duties and taking care of HandsomeBoy, I attended an old friend's new son's bris. All through the ceremony, I kept thinking back to my boys' Naming Ceremony which was nearly two years ago. A few times, I found tears in my eyes. Of course, because they were not newborns, my sons' brises were performed at CHOP and not in our living room!
I was able to attend the bris because RockStar got out early and relieved me from taking care of HandsomeBoy. Yay RockStar! I really wanted to attend the bris! After the bris, I picked up a friend and we went to see Hairspray, which has become one of my top few musicals EVER! This was my second time seeing it and I enjoyed it just as much as the first time! The original John Waters movie Hairspray is also very good, but more twisted than the stage musical. The new version is very uplifting and energizing. How can you not love the main characters of Tracy, Penny, Link and Seaweed?
On the plate for today - finish the outline for the event I'm hosting at my synagogue tonight, cook a few dishes for that event, take care of HandsomeBoy, transfer CutiePie from the synagogue school to the daycare, attack the hotspot of papers on my desk, mop the kitchen floor, make some phone calls, create a shopping list for Passover and the four (4!!!!!!) seders I'm attending this year and find someone to sit with HandsomeBoy here at home while I attend the event at the synagogue. Yep. That's all. Just that. Shouldn't be hard. <<<>>> Okay, let's go!

Life goes on....
HandsomeBoy is still sick. Not as bad, but he still can't return to school. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he can go back tomorrow!
I was pretty productive yesterday. Weekly Home Blessing, lots of laundry, dishes, shredding more documents, making phone calls, updating my calendar, paid bills, finished some long over-due thank you notes, inventoried Big Red's (aka the dog) medicines, practiced HandsomeBoy's sight words with him, did homework with HandsomeBoy and CutiePie, made menus for the week, went grocery shopping, went to post office, recycled newspapers and scrap papers, cooked dinner, served dinner, ate dinner, cleaned up dinner, made CutiePie's lunch for today and finally sat down to watch Dancing With the Stars. Whew! What a day!
Today, I've already gotten the boys up, dressed them, fed them, medicated HandsomeBoy, dropped CutiePie off at school (and he was NOT happy about going when HandsomeBoy didn't have to!), took Big Red to the vet to get a blood test and refill on one of his meds, came home, did about 15 minutes of my paid employment work via the internet and am now updating my Blog while HandsomeBoy patiently waits for his turn on the computer. I think he's trying to encourage me to be quick because he's decided to spend the time waiting by drawing on his legs with a pen. He says it's a treasure map. I guess he really is starting to feel better.
Today is also going to be busy. At noon, we have to pickup CutiePie at the synagogue school and take him over to the daycare school, so I expect we'll be having another issue then. Back at home, I've got more organizing and ironing to do, plus I'm going to try to do HandsomeBoy's homework early in the afternoon. Later this afternoon, I'm supposed to go to a bris and then to the theatre tonight. Of course, those last two events are completely dependent upon RockStar and his schedule. Since HandsomeBoy is still sick, I can't ask anyone else to babysit him while I go enjoy myself at a theatre! Just wouldn't be right.
The rest of the week is also crazy busy and I REALLY need to get back into the office and do some work that will actually result in money!!!

Sick? Tired? Or Sick AND Tired?
The last two weeks have been exhausting. Not because I've accomplished (or even attempted) anything monumental, but just because of illness. Not even any great, monumental, staggering illness, either. Just normal, boring, plain old "don't feel good" illness. I've been struggling with being under the weather. I haven't been flat out sick, I just haven't felt good -- nausea, chills, aches, blahs. And, no -- I definitely NOT pregnant!
Just as I started to feel better, HandsomeBoy got sick. It started on Saturday with a light cough and sniffles. By Sunday morning, it was full croup. Ugh! So, since 6am yesterday, I've been doing my best Florence Nightengale impersonation, giving nebulizer treatments, cough medicines, acetaminophen and pushing fluids on a coughy, hot, sluggish child. He's feeling somewhat better at this moment as he floats around the computer, knocking into me and trying to write me notes on a Post-It despite the fact that he really can't spell yet. RockStar had to work ALL WEEKEND (read: until 10pm Saturday and 11pm Sunday), so other than sitting with HandsomeBoy while I took CutiePie to Sunday School and did "door duty" (i.e. ersatz security) during the early session of Sunday School, I've been pretty much on my own for the weekend and today. Well, RockStar did take CutiePie to school this morning, which helped a lot.
Anyway, I shouldn't complain. RockStar was working hard at a job he loves and that pays him well for his time and HandsomeBoy is not seriously ill and I did get a lot done around the house while I've been confined here. In fact, since I was up at 6am this morning to help get CutiePie ready for school, after RockStar left, I decided NOT to go back to bed. Instead, I did my best FlyLady act and did my morning routine and my Weekly Home Blessing (i.e., straighten the place up!). It is looking better in here. Even small changes help.
One of the things I did was to finally take all the DVDs and videos out of our wall unit (where they don't fit well and some have to go in front of others, so you can't even see them all) and put them into a simple little DVD/Video shelf thing that is MADE FOR THAT TASK and has been sitting next to the wall unit for about two years with nothing in it except random junk and toys. Why I waited so long to do something that took me no more than 10 minutes is a mystery! The wall unit looks SOOOOOOO much better! Now, I'll be able to put some of the bulky stuff like the boys' V-tech Smile, Leapster console and their LeapPads and cartridges in the wall unit, where they really belong. That will be a project for this afternoon!
So much to do today on my day home! Let's see how much I can accomplish, shall we???? Wish me luck!

Hmmmmm. I really don't have a particular favorite person. I do get most of my news from NPR, however, and there's many people there that I like to listen to. Maybe Scott Simon, who anchors Weekend Edition Saturday. He always sounds like he's really enjoying his job. Of course, much of the news he reports is not happy news, but even when he's talking about evil events around the world, I still get the impression that he means what he says. He always manages to sound like a real person and not a talking head. My favorite moment was when he announced that he would be off for a few weeks because he was going to China to meet his new daughter. The joy in his voice brought tears to my eyes.

A few years ago when RockStar and I were touring Yellowstone National Park with friends, I was so enamored of the area around the North Entrance that I kept saying that I was going to buy the town one day when I hit the lottery. The name? Abster, Montana! I liked the sound of it so much that I've actually used AbsterMontana as a screenname on some websites!

I need to finish Pride and Prejudice, which is currently on my bedside table. Then, I might read the last two books in Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events series. Also, with the final Harry Potter book coming in July, I might start re-reading the series in anticipation.

Same thing I notice in everyone -- their attitude. Do they seem happy? Angry? Upset? Frustrated? Impatient? Silly? Fun? Nice? Pleasant? Uppity?

Where does the time go????
Wow. I blinked and two and a half weeks went by!
Well, not exactly, but you know what I mean! Of course, the past two weeks have been crazy busy, but aren't they all? What did I do? I worked, cleaned, washed, folded, cooked, organized, shopped, called, emailed, medicated and all the other usual stuff. I also drove 6 hours (each way) to visit my cousin because we're working on a project. I can't discuss it yet because it's still ultra-top-secret but we think it will lead to our early retirement if we do this correctly!!! Yes, maybe that's a little wishful thinking, but we do think we're on to something. When I visited her in February, we watched the video for The Secret and decided to implement some of that thinking in our lives. Both of us are very positive people and have overcome a lot to get where we are today, so it's not a huge adjustment for us. Maybe I'll post my thoughts about that later. Anyway, after I got back home, I got sick and I'm only now feeling better.
I also took CutiePie to a flower show, which I thought he would enjoy. I've taken HandsomeBoy the past two years and he had a good time. CutiePie was really only interested in the guy playing guitar in one of the exhibits. Oh, and also he liked checking out the garden tools vendor booths. Yep - nothing like a five year old with a shovel in his hand to strike fear in the hearts of mothers everywhere! We ran into one vendor from Russia who was selling beautiful crystal vases. I tried to get CutiePie to listen to him, but he didn't care. Neither of my boys speaks any Russian anymore. CutiePie never did really speak much, due to his young age and also to his hearing problems when he lived in Russia; HandsomeBoy, however, was unbelievably conversant for his young age! Our translator told us that she'd never heard a child speak so well in all the years she'd been working with the orphanages! We tried to speak Russian at home as long as we could to help him retain some of it, but our Russian wasn't even as good as his! Very quickly, he started to use English to make himself understood! When we first got him, he would get very frustrated with our limited Russian vocabulary and would look at us with disdain when he had to repeat himself slowly while we rifled through our little Russian/English dictionary!
Times have certainly changed in the past two and a half years! I just met with HandsomeBoy's Kindergarten teacher for our second conference and we are both very pleased with his progress. He's doing great in everything except the written language and even in that, he's not doing too badly! His progress is astounding! Both boys have been going to the same daycare since January 2005; HandsomeBoy got to stay this year because they offer a licensed Kindergarten in addition to the day care. Next year, both HandsomeBoy and CutiePie will go to the Elementary School across the street - HandsomeBoy in first grade and CutiePie in the Kindergarten. They are so excited about going to the "Big Boy School" as they call it! I'm pretty excited myself!
I love the changes that happen daily in the boys! I can't believe how much they've grown since we met them! Last night, as he was getting ready to sleep, HandsomeBoy started telling me all about the Solar System, including how Pluto used to be a planet but isn't anymore. How cool is that? CutiePie surprised me the other night when we were watching Dancing With the Stars -- when Billy Ray Cyrus came on, he jumped up, pointed at the screen and shouted, "Look Mommy - Hannah Montana's Daddy!!!!!!!!" Silly me, I said, "No, sweetie, that's Billy Ray Cyrus. He's a singer." Moments later, I was corrected as the announcer mentioned that he IS Hannah Montana's dad. Nothing like being outdone in pop culture quiz by your five year old!!!
In other news, I'm just happy that it's spring! My crocuses are up and I saw some daffodils yesterday near my office. Even though it's not that far away, due to the strange effects of the river and the city and such, the flowers always seem to be about a week ahead there.
That's all for now. I'm going to rededicate myself to posting more often and on more interesting stuff.

Wow. I've got a good list of books to look for the next time I go to the library! You may have noticed that I didn't strike out any of the books. There's quite a few that I'm certainly in no hurry to read, but I didn't see any on the list that I absolutely wouldn't try to read. I may not be willing to pay money for them, but a library book is always the right price! Also, although I do TRY to finish books, I will put them down if I find that I really just don't like it. The only exceptions are when the book was assigned for school or for a bookclub. Then, I'll finish it, but keep a list of the reasons why I hated it. The only other time I finished a book that I couldn't stand was when a distant relative asked me to read a book he'd written. It was so terribly horribly absolutely awful that I agonized reading every word, sentence, paragraph and chapter. But, because I'd promised him to read it, read it I did. In the end, I'm not even sure what I wrote back to him. I probably said things like "I've never read a book quite like it." "I can see that this was a labor of love for you." and other platitudes similar to what Paula says to the dreadful auditioners on American Idol.

Our evening so far......
Wow. What a day! I'm so glad I'll be asleep by 9pm. I'm exhausted!
After working all day and hearing about CutiePie's trouble at his morning school, I arrived at the daycare to pickup both boys and was oh so thrilled to hear that HandsomeBoy had a "rough day" and also just in time to witness CutiePie playing very roughly with the very same boy that HandsomeBoy hit last night!!!
So, we came home and had a long talk about violence, fighting, playing, and how to treat friends and other people we love. I told there there would be no TV tonight, only nice playing together. They were fine with that and I went into the kitchen to start making dinner. Since Friday night is the beginning of Shabbat, I try to have a nice family dinner each week. As I made the Ginger Lime Chicken, Green Beans & Spaetzel and Cheddar Garlic Mashed Potatoes, I noticed that the boys were laughing a little too loudly in the family room. When I went in to check on them, I could instantly see that they had stripped down to their boxer shorts and each had one of the Thing Hands and were "playfully" pummeling each other! Sigh.
Anyway, RockStar ended up caught in traffic and came home almost 90 minutes late, which always drives me crazy! At least he was safe! When we finally got ready for dinner and all sat at the table, RockStar decided that it was time to tell the boys that their great-grandfather had died last week. We really weren't sure how they were going to react. HandsomeBoy, by far the more sensitive of the two, decided that he wanted to say a prayer and started in on this beautiful little speech about how much he loved his great-grandfather and how he hopes that he's okay now and how he hopes his grandmother (GGF's daughter) is okay and that he wants his grandmother to take him to the cemetery to see GGF the next time we travel out that way. It was so touching and sincere and honest. What a great kid! It really balanced out the hitting and fighting of the past two days.
Then we lit our Shabbat candles, said the prayers over the wine and challah and I started to dish out dinner. It wasn't until that very moment that I remembered that we're in Lent and my dear Catholic RockStar wouldn't be able to eat the yummy chicken dish I'd prepared. I felt soooooo bad! He was okay; in fact, he usually forgets at least once during Lent. I try to hard to remember and I usually do. Tonight, however, it was the last thing on my mind. Note to self: find veggie Shabbat menus for the next month!
Anyway, the boys are in bed and quieting down already. I'm heading up that way myself right now. We've got a very busy weekend ahead of us and I really need a good night's sleep!

Hit Me, Baby!
Grrrrrr...... last night HandsomeBoy hit another kid at school and I just found out that CutiePie hit a teacher this morning. I'm going to...... um...... ack! What AM I going to do?
Now, I know that HB is only 6 and CP is only 5, so it's not like they were in a dangerous gang-related brawl or anything like that. BUT, hitting is NOT okay. I'm not sure exactly what happened with HB yesterday, but apparently he didn't like what the other kid was doing, so he punched him THREE TIMES in the face causing a NOSE BLEED! And the other kid is only THREE FREAKIN' YEARS OLD!!!! What was he thinking?
CutiePie might have been hitting the teacher in jest, but he apparently hit her on her butt, which just compounded the problem.
We're going to have a loooooooong talk about this tonight (again) and all violent play is going to be forbidden. I have to admit that we've been letting the boys play-fight each other lately. Mainly, we allowed it because 1). they're just playing and not actually trying to hurt each other, 2). it burns off energy and during the winter there aren't as many ways for them to do that, 3). I'm glad to see them playing with each other in any way at all, 4). they've been getting creative in their play, pretending to be various charcters and types of people or animals and I thought it was a good creative outlet for them, and 5).......... um, now that I'm looking at this list, it really seems like a bunch of rationalizations. Yes, they're active boys who like to be physically active, but it's NOT acceptable and they are NOT allowed to do this any more.
Any advice????

Five on Friday
I haven't done this in a while, so I'll start back up now. Here's my Five on Friday, which can be found here. I'm not really a dessert kind a person ( I much prefer appetizers to desserts), but in honor of it being Purim this weekend and a game called "Queen Esther's Cake Walk" commonly being played during Purim carnivals in synagogues all over on Purim, I'll try to tackle these questions!
Cake Walk
1. At your next birthday celebration you can have any flavor, shape, size, and style of cake you want. What do you choose? (bonus: post a photo or link to a photo of your ideal birthday cake)
As I said, I'm not really a dessert kind of person and cake is actually my least favorite of all desserts. If I had to choose a "cake", however, I'd probably pick cheesecake (the thick-as-a-brick kind, not light-and-fluffy kind) or a pie.
2. For friends and loved ones: do you buy a birthday cake or bake one for them?
Occasionally, I will make a cake, but I usually just buy it. I love to cook, but I'm not as into baking. Of course, I do make a really great Dirt Cake! I don't have any photos of it at hand, but here's a link to a dessert contest I won with Dirt Cake at Chaotic Mom's site last year. You can see a really great photo of a really great Dirt Cake I made and read a very funny story about it, too!
3. Do you prefer sumptuous flavor or incredible decorations?
Flavor, Baby!!!! Looking good is nice, but it's what's inside that really counts! Isn't it amazing how food mirrors life?
4. What interesting cake, frosting, and filling combination would you most love to try?
Hmmmmm.... really don't have much of an opinion here. Sorry.
5. Tell us about a school subject or hobby that is a "cake walk" for you.
Up until High School, all subjects in school were a cake walk! Then, I guess I stopped paying attention and had to work harder to do well. Today, I'd have to say that the areas of my life that I'd consider a "cake walk" would be cooking, finding fun activities for my family, winning online sweepstakes, learning new languages with the Pimsleur system! It's not much, but that's the way it is!!! Have a great weekend, everyone!

Thirteen things I MUST do today

Not a very interesting post, I admit, but I think that by posting it here, I'm more likely to actually accomplish all these things today! Okay, here goes..........!
1. Return videos to library
2. Make dinner
3. Walk dog (and self, for that matter)
4. Create flyer for CSA program this summer
5. Write thank you notes for CutiePie's birthday gifts
6. Pay bills
7. Buy ingredients and container for "dirt cake" which I'm going to make for the Purim carnival on Sunday. Also buy incredients for Hamentashen.
8. Find and print recipe for Hamentashen.
9. Upload new photos to Kodak Gallery
10. Straighten up the house
11. Finish, fold and put away laundry
